Alcúdia in the north-east has the best-preserved medieval town walls in Mallorca and an old centre that stays alive out of season. Beside it lie the Roman ruins of Pollentia. The harbour and the long sandy beaches of Playa de Muro follow, as does the s'Albufera nature park, the largest wetland in the Balearics. From Palma it is around 55 minutes. Markets are held on Tuesdays and Sundays. If you rent in winter, prefer the old town to the harbour — daily life continues there, while much on the waterfront is shut.
Daily life and getting around
The old town inside the walls has shops, doctors and the markets on Tuesdays and Sundays. The harbour and Playa de Muro are two to five kilometres away, with a cycle path in between.
Palma is around 55 minutes on the Ma-13. Buses serve Palma and the neighbouring towns, on a reduced winter timetable. Plan on a car for daily life.
Who rents here, and winter
Families and winterers who want beach and nature — s'Albufera starts just to the south. From February the cyclists arrive, which brings hotels and restaurants back early.
In winter the gap between old town and harbour is wide: inside the walls daily life continues, while on the waterfront much stays shut until March. Bear that in mind when choosing the location.
