Sóller sits in a valley basin of the Serra de Tramuntana, surrounded by orange groves and mountains. Through the tunnel it is around 30 minutes to Palma; the historic narrow-gauge railway from 1912 takes longer but is the finer journey. It is the only town in the range with urban daily life: a Saturday market, doctors, schools and shops open all year. The port is three kilometres away, reached by the historic tram. People who rent here for a few months usually come for the mountains — from October to April the Tramuntana is the best walking country in Spain.
Daily life and getting around
Sóller is the only town in the range with a complete daily life: supermarkets, doctors, pharmacies, schools and a Saturday market. The centre is walkable, and the historic tram runs to the port every 30 minutes.
Palma is about 30 minutes by car through the tunnel. The narrow-gauge railway takes around an hour and runs several times a day. Going over the old pass road means 50 minutes and a lot of bends.
Who rents here, and winter
Mostly walkers and cyclists coming between October and April, plus people working remotely who want mountains rather than sea. Families find schools in town, which is rare elsewhere in the Tramuntana.
Sóller stays alive in winter, unlike the coastal resorts. It is cooler and damper than the coast though — check the listing for heating and double glazing. Parking in the centre is tight, so put a space in your enquiry.
