Valldemossa lies at 400 metres in the Serra de Tramuntana, around 25 minutes north-west of Palma. It is known for its charterhouse, where Frédéric Chopin and George Sand spent the winter of 1838–39. The grey stone houses, narrow lanes and terraced fields around them form part of the Tramuntana's UNESCO World Heritage listing. In summer day tourism brings crowds; in winter quiet returns. Daily life and getting around
Valldemossa is small: one supermarket, a baker, a pharmacy, a doctor. For the big shop you drive to Palma or Esporles. The centre is crossed on foot in ten minutes.
Palma is around 25 minutes on the Ma-1110, Sóller 30 on the Ma-10. There is a bus to Palma but infrequent — without a car daily life becomes hard work.

People who want a few months to write, paint or simply be quiet. Supply is small, so enquire early.
At 400 metres it is noticeably cooler than the coast and damp in winter. Some venues close between November and March, but you get the hiking trails to yourself. Check the listing for heating.
