Playa de Palma is the five-kilometre stretch of beach between Cala Estancia and S'Arenal, about 15 minutes from Palma. For a long time the name stood for mass tourism, but that is now changing: new boutique hotels are opening and the promenade has been renewed. Upmarket living is concentrated in certain spots along the beach. The direct beachfront setting, at noticeably lower prices than in the city, is especially valued.
Daily life and getting around
Playa de Palma runs for six kilometres of sandy beach from Can Pastilla to s'Arenal. Supermarkets, pharmacies and doctors are plentiful; the promenade is continuous and has its own cycle path.
Palma centre is 15 to 20 minutes by bus or car, around 30 by bike along the seafront. The airport is five to ten minutes — the shortest link anywhere.
Who rents here, and what to know
Winterers who want a long beach on the doorstep, and anyone after plenty of floor space for little money. In winter the price level here is the lowest in greater Palma.
The seasonal contrast is stark, though. Between May and September Playa de Palma is one of the busiest places on the island; between November and March some businesses close and the promenade belongs to walkers. If you are renting in summer, check carefully how close the flat is to the promenade.
